Dr. Rosling and Ms. Noveck, two influential thinkers on the power of Open Data, information visualization, and innovation in governance and development, shared their ideas on how the Bank’s new Open Data policy is helping transform the world in "The Changing World - A New Mindset for a Multipolar World".
Hans Rosling is Professor of International Health at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. Known for his TED talks and visualization software, Rosling’s presentations are grounded in solid statistics (drawn from World Bank and UN Data) but use powerful animations to transform development data into moving bubbles an flowing curves that make global trends more clear, intuitive, and even playful. Rosling developed the breakthrough software behind his visualizations through his nonprofit Gapminder, founded with his son and daughter-in-law. The free software — which can be loaded with any data — was purchased by Google in March 2007.
Beth Noveck is the United States Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Open Government and leads President Obama's Open Government Initiative. Based at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, she is an expert on technology and institutional innovation. Her groundbreaking book Wiki Government challenges current paradigms in governance and is the basis of much of the Obama’s administrations innovations in Open Government. Ms. Noveck will talk about the impact of Open Data on economic development and the recent experience of the United States.
The World Bank’s Open Data Initiative launched on April 20, 2010 with the unveiling of data.worldbank.org and open access to key databases such as the World Development Indicators, Africa Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, and Doing Business. Visitors to the site can easily find, download, manipulate, use, and re-use the data compiled by the World Bank, without restriction.
