The World Bank's Development Data Group and the IFC recently joined forces to launch the Global Consumption Database, the most comprehensive dataset to date on consumer spending patterns in developing countries. The database, based on government surveys of more than one million households in more than 90 countries, will help companies discover untapped demand and design market research to evaluate business opportunities in emerging markets.

Two major updates to time series published in World Development Indicators (WDI) mean that the WDI database will be updated “out of timetable” on May 6; the regular schedule is April, July, September and December.

The World Bank opened its data to the public on April 20, 2010, providing free and open access to a comprehensive set of data about development in countries around the globe. Central and local governments around the world are increasingly ‘opening' a range of data, for free, including as part of continuing global efforts to improve public services, create economic growth and enhance transparency.

Each year on July 1, The World Bank revises the classification of the world’s economies based on estimates of gross national income (GNI) per capita for the previous year. The updated GNI per capita estimates are also used as input to the Bank’s operational classification of economies, which determines their lending eligibility. As of 1 July 2013, the World Bank income classifications by GNI per capita are as follows:
