Each year on July 1 the World Bank revises its classification of the world’s economies based on estimates of gross national income (GNI) per capita for the previous year. Income classifications on the country pages of the Open Data site and regional and income group aggregates in the World Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, and other databases will be revised accordingly at the time of their next scheduled release.

Global community meet to discuss implementation of SDMX, and showcase tools The third SDMX Global Conference took place in Washington during May 2-4, 2011.  Hosted by the World Bank and IMF, the conference was attended by more than 200 officials from 90 countries, as well as all major international agencies and six vendors including Google.

It’s been a year since the World Bank made its public databases, including the World Development Indicators database available as open data: free of charge, in accessible non-proprietary machine-readable formats, and using an open license for use and re-use. At the time of the open data announcement there were around 140,000 regular users of the subscription database annually. But providing free and easier access to the databases has had an immediate and lasting impact on data use.

The World Development Indicators 2011 publication and database update are now available. The publication is the 15th edition of WDI and the database now contains updated data through 2009 or 2010 for many indicators. A number of additions and improvements have been made to the WDI database in this update.
